3D video on N 3DSDespite Warnings of a Backlash, 3D Movies Aren't Going Away 3D movies seem to have finally achieved widespread mainstream acceptance at the box office after their heyday in the 1950s, followed by decades of the format being used as a gimmick mainly to enhance horror and science-fiction films. Some of the biggest hits of 2011, such as Avatar and Alice in Wonderland, have earned the majority of their revenues from higher-priced 3D tickets. And studios seem to believe that digital 3D is the wave of the future: Warner Brothers announced in May that all of its big releases, such as special effects-driven films and superhero movies, would be in 3D, while Dreamworks has said that all its new movies will be in 3D.

This early, however, the glut of 3D movies seems to be suffering the beginnings of a backlash, as audiences are beginning to reject bad movies released in the format, as shown by the weak openings for Step Up 3D and Cats and Dogs: The Revenge of Kitty Galore in the US. Another source of controversy are "3D conversions" in which movies originally shot in 2D are converted into 3D during post-production, resulting in unsatisfying 3D images that many audience members claimed looked like 'pop-up books'. Despite these presentments of possible disaster on the 3D front, don't expect 3D movies to go away any time soon: the last few months of 2010 will still see the release of many potential blockbusters in 3D, including Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows and Tron: Legacy. But even films you would not normally expect to see in the format are taking the plunge, such as the third film in the Jackass series, which is set to be released in 3D in the fall. And 2011 is set to see no less than 30 movies released in the format, including highly-anticipated films such as the superhero movies Green Lantern, Thor and Captain America, as well as a fourth Pirates of the Caribbean movie and sequels to animated films Cars and Kung Fu Panda.
